AGE GROUP SWIMMING

The Molokai Swim Team has been very active throughout the long course

season that began in late April. Over the past three months, all four

swimmers have qualified for the upcoming state championships to be held on

Maui from July 31 to August 3.

Mahinameli and Leoho`onani Reyes and Lenn Yonemura have each made 10

qualifying times and Loni Yonemura has three qualifying times. All

swimmers are limited to eight entries for individual events for the

championships. The four swimmers will also be entered in relay events.

The Reyes girls will also be heading to Seattle, Washington shortly after

the state championships to compete in the Western Zone Championships. Leo

has been to several zone meets while this year's meet will the first for

Mahina.

The Hawaii Swimming Club also captured two team championships as the

season has progressed. During the Memorial Day weekend, the four-island

contingent captured first place in the 24th Annual Coach Soichi Sakamoto

Invitational in Wailuku.

A little over a month later, the team gathered at the Kaimuki High School

pool for the 50th Annual Keo Nakama International Invitational Meet and

barely edged out a spirited San Francisco Parks and Recreation team for

the overall team championship.

Plans for a sanctioned meet have been confirmed for August 29. The meet

is scheduled to start at 10:30 AM and last for approximately four hours.

The public is invited to attend the meet which will feature teams from

Oahu, Hilo, and Maui. The team members and their families are being

joined by current and former high school swimmers and families to sponsor

this meet.

A beginner's class and pre-season conditioning for the short course season

is already under way. The short course season will begin in October with

the championships slated for Spring Break in March. The high school

season will run concurrently with the short course season from January

through February.

Practices begin at 4:00 daily.
