1997 CANNED FOOD DRIVE
a community service project that the local swim team helped in.
The Scouts from Units 47 and 57 joined forces with the students
from the Molokai High and Intermediate School Student Council Service
Committee and age group swimmers from the Molokai Swim Team in a canned
food drive on November 22.
The Scouts were spear-headed by Unit Chairmen Kelvin Keanini of
Unit 57 and Alex Bishaw from Unit 47. The Molokai Distric Chairman for
the Boy Scouts is Timothy Meyer, Sr. The MHIS students were organized by
Advisor Jean Tanaka while the Swim Team was led by Coaches David Kalani
and Lloyd Yonemura.
Each unit recruited a number of participants and chaperones for
the early morning project. Patrick Nakayama and Kim Tempo were on hand to
advise the Service Committee while scout leaders Leiff Bush, Bobo Alcon,
Larry Clark, Dennis Keanini, Tony Diorec, Rhonda Dilyard, and Earl
Nakamura supervised the scouts.
Despite a busy day in the Kaunakakai community, the door-to-door
drive produced over 1,400 canned goods. The unified efforts were a team
effort and each group will be evaluating the drive to make improvements
for next year.
All of the volunteers who participated in the drive convey their
deepest appreciation to everyone who contributed to the effort and thanks
you, the Molokai community, for your generous donations. Mahalo to
Friendly Market Center and Misakis for their donations of the plastic bags
that were used throughout the drive.
If the volunteers missed your home and if you still would like to
make a donation, please drop off your contribution at the MEO office in
Ranch Camp. MEO Director Irene Kaahanui will be happy to accept all
donations. Mahalo to the volunteers and donors and congratulations to the
Molokai Community!
