AGE GROUP SWIMMING
Molokai Swim Team members Lenn and Loni Yonemura and Leoho`onani and
Mahinameli Reyes prepped for the 49th Annual Keo Nakama Invitational Swim
Meet with warmup meets on Hilo and Maui during the month of June. The
four swimmers continued to accumulate state qualifying times in both
meets.
On June 14 in Hilo, Leo improved on her 50 M Free and 200 M Individual
Medley times in addition to taking her first crack at the 400 M Freestyle.
Needing to work on the longer distances to complement her sprint events,
Leo swam a strong heat in the 400. As with all swimmers as they age up,
the shorter distances become longer with each meet and with each age
division.
Mahina improved on her qualifying times in the 50 M and 100 M Free events.
Mahina placed fifth in the 50 M Free and third in the 100 M Free. She
came close to earning qualifying times in the 50 M Breast and 50 M
Butterly.
Loni also swam a strong 50 M Free and narrowly qualified for the state
championships in the 400 M Free. She placed third in the IM but was four
seconds off of her personal best.
Lenn placed third in the 1500 Free but failed to better his previous time.
He was a second and half from qualifying in the 400 M Free but managed to
better his time in the 50 M Free. Lenn won the 100 M Breaststroke event
in making an attempt to earn a zone qualifying time.
A week later at the Coach Soichi Sakamoto Pool in Wailuku, Mahina swam the
100 M Free, 100 M Backstroke, 100 M Breaststroke, and 50 M Butterfly
events on Maui. She bettered her Breaststroke time with a fifth place
finish and also placed fifth in the Backstroke. Mahina also placed sixth
in the Fly event and fifth in the Free.
Leo bettered her times in the 100 M Backstroke (National B Time), the 100
M Breaststroke (third place), and the 50 M Butterfly. She also swam the
100 M Free in a state qualifying time.
Loni entered only two events but managed to better her previous times and
place first in both of them, the 100 M Free and the 100 M Backstroke.
