AGE GROUP SWIMMING The Maui Age Group Swimming Association returned to its regular swimming schedule with a meet on February 8 at the Coach Soichi Sakamoto Pool. Lenn and Loni Yonemura and Leoho'onani and Mahinameli Reyes of the Molokai Swim Team participated in the meet with their teammates from the Hawaii Swimming Club (HSC)-Kahului. Still aiming for qualifying times in the 15-16 age group, 14-year old Lenn Yonemura placed second in the 100 Y Free and the 100 Y Backstroke events. In between, he won the 200 Y Breaststroke and the 200 Y Individual (IM) events. Although none of the times qualified him for the state finals when he ages up later this month, Lenn remains very close to making the times in upcoming meets. Loni Yonemura will complete her season in the 11-12 age group as she place fourth in the 100 Y Freestyle, tenth in the 50 Y Breaststroke, sixth in the 100 Y Backstroke, and fourth in the 200 Y IM. With the exception of the Breaststroke event, Loni attained qualifying times in the other events. Leoho'onani Reyes began a new career in a new age group. The 11-year old made her debut in the 11-12 division with a bang as she attained a "B" time in the 100 Y Freestyle and a state qualifying time in the 50 Y Breaststroke events. She also swam the 100 Y backstroke and the 200 Y IM. Mahinameli Reyes, an 8-year old swimming against older competition in the 10 & Under and 11-12 divisions, continues to hold her own in her effort to make state qualifying times. She swam the 100 Y Freestyle and the 50 Y Backstroke in the 11-12 division and attained a "B" time in the 50 Y Breaststroke in the 10 & Under division. The Molokai Swim Team is preparing for a learn to swim session beginning in March. Stay tuned for further details.
